Retirement-one year later

It is hard to believe that one year ago today I walked out of work for the last time. I looked at my earlier post celebrating this big event. I wanted to find out how I felt that day. I wanted to see what my expectations were, what I was thinking, planning, and to see how this year came together.

This is what I discovered.

I commented that I was free to pursue many things.  I am pleased to find that many of those dreams are being fulfilled but… some not exactly as expected!

I come and go as I please.

I did not start a sewing business. Most of my (many) hours of sewing are for gifts or simply pleasure.

I can stay up late if I want to… but… these days I really don’t make it much past 9:00PM.

I do spend time with family and friends and have worked on strengthening those relationships.

I spend a great deal of time in the kitchen and you will often find me experimenting with new recipes. For someone who really never liked to cook this was a huge discovery.

I cleaned out a few closets and drawers but somehow this does not seem as important to me as it once did (go figure).

We did plant a vegetable garden last year but spent so much time vacationing that the results were somewhat less than spectacular.

Oh well.

I did make several batches of strawberry jam

and even took a crack at making lemon marmalade.

I have not read many books this year.  Although I love to read, I really found that I don’t like to sit quietly very much.

I have spent countless hours talking on the phone, emailing and catching up with people. When I want to. Voice mail or text messages when I don’t.

I did manage to regularly attend the gym 2-4 times a week… faithfully… until about Thanksgiving…

I do attend a weekly Bible study, occasionally keep grandkids for the weekend and do some babysitting for our newest granddaughter.

Well, you get the idea. Some success…some not so much.

But…

I am happy and loving life!

Not for one minute have I missed working at a “real job.” I love the freedom that retirement allows.

I love spending time with Thommmee. I don’t miss the extra money as I had feared. More time allows for more ways to be frugal. I find I need less-in fact-I find I want less!

I did buy a much needed coat at a local thrift store… for $8.00.

With all the time I spend in the kitchen I splurged on a glass Pyrex pie pan, loaf, pan, square pan, and glass mixing bowl for $1.00 each at an estate sale.

I have clipped coupons, shopped sales, and made many gifts. I try not to waste and plan meals based on what is in the kitchen. We don’t eat out often. We are a do-it-yourself couple living the good life in our little house in our own little corner of the world.

I wouldn’t trade a thing!

I’m purring a lot these days

  1. Thank you. I am having the time of my life! One thing I’ve learned is that each phase of my life has offered different opportunities and experiences and I think the secret is to enjoy each one as it comes. I wish I would have understood that better when I was younger.

  2. Thank you very much for your kind words! It makes me feel better knowing that this stage will soon pass and I look forward to seeing my children grow up and have their own lives. I am trying my best to balance everything and yes, to save for the future! I am inspired by your blog and will visit more often. Thanks also for sharing the lemon marmalade recipe. I will give this a try as soon as I get some lemons from my in-laws. Have a great day!

  4. What a lovely compliment! I too raised four young children close in age and then added a fifth a little later on! I can attest to how busy your life must be. Let me assure you the job is hard but it is so worth it! You sound like a young mother who really has her head and her priorities pointed in the right direction. It’s hard to think about retirement when you have so much going on😄, I know . Let me just say this. Save! Save! Save! Perhaps something I can learn from other bloggers is how to refer you back to my post dated 2/13/14! I have included a link or perhaps you can check the archives. ☺ https://mommermom.wordpress.com/2014/02/13/lemon-marmalade/ . I do sometimes really struggle with the technicalities of the blog. Again, thank you so much. I look forward to reading some more of your wonderful recipes.

  5. Reading this post made me reflect how my life is going to be when retirement age comes. I’m still in my early 30s with 4 small kids and a busy family life that although I’m a stay at home mom, my schedule is so hectic and I barely have time for myself. It’s inspiring to learn insights from you. I will catch up reading your past posts cause I feel you have lots of things I can learn from. And speaking of that, I am interested in learning how you make your lemon marmalade. Thanks a lot and have a wonderful day!

  9. I loved reading your one year post-retirement message. You have learned so much this first year, Jan. I guess to sum it up, “Happiness is just under one’s nose”. I need to keep that in mind more often, and you have helped me see that I have many blessings to count.

I was going to ask if you made the mom bunny and babies, too. Eric’s three grandkids would have loved one–especially the 4-year-old.

    Love, Mary Ann

  12. Thanks Nancy! I wish I could take credit for that rabbit. Yes, I do a lot of sewing and some of it maybe not half bad but unfortunately (sigh) not that. Thank you for your encouragement and positive thoughts. I love having the opportunity to talk with people in different places in their life and I learn from each one of them.

  13. A wonderful post. You’ve just included so many genuine observations and feelings about what it is like to switch gears in such a big life-changing time. I wrap a lot of my personal identity around what I do for a living, so its interesting to read about someone’s perspective on what happens in the year after you move away from that. Btw, your sewing is amazing, if that rabbit is yours. Do you sell to stores in your area? You should, something like that would be a unique and wonderful gift for a baby shower. xx Nancy

  14. You are so right, Marlene! I know health can play a major factor in how we enjoy life. You are an amazing woman to have such a positive attitude and look at life so brightly while dealing with these issues. They say attitude is everything and I have to agree with that. It is how you look at life, counting your blessings, and appreciating those around you that can make our life more full and meaningful. Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt comment.

  15. Thanks Patty B. For everyone I guess retirement is a different experience and we each have to do it in our own way but Whoo Hoo is right! Sounds like a man who knew how to set priorities!!😄

  16. I hate to say this but… you seem to have your priorities exactly right. People and relationships first, the doing pf things after. 🙂 I’m grateful everyday I don’t have to go to a job but I do miss the connections that were made at work. I think the people who hate retirement are those that have no outside connections and no hobbies. Your life is full outside of work so you still feel the joy of life.

I too need less and do more. I love the refection on the past year. Even with my health issue, I still love my life more now that I’m older. We gain such perspective from this vantage point.

Keep enjoying. That’s what it’s about.

  17. Good for you – when my husband retired many asked what he was doing, what hobby did he pick up, did he take on a part time job, etc etc….And this is what we would tell people, “He is doing what he wants, when he wants, sleeps in, gets up early, watches tv, works on his hobby, (which was antiques , WWII / Civil War memorabilia and research on the items on the items he would buy, he loved research,) anyway basically – he no longer had a time schedule, sounds like you threw yours out too and are enjoying it. WOO HOO –

  18. What a lovely post. A year in reflection must have gone fast with all of that living that you have crammed into it. Knowing that you already have it all makes you one of the lucky ones Mommermom and doing whatever takes your fancy is your reward for all of those years spent slaving for the man. Here’s to retirement and loving it! 🙂
