Proud to be an American….

I can’t listen to (much less sing) patriotic music without getting all choked up. Perhaps you too feel that way about your favorite patriotic songs either as an American or of your own home country. I think it is great to be proud of our heritage!

There is no time in the United States like the 4th of July (American Independence Day) to appreciate our patriotic music.  Some of our most beloved songs have been around for some time while others are more recent. Regardless, they still fill our hearts with pride and bring a tear to most eyes.

Some of our most well known and popular songs are:

America The Beautiful-sometimes called the national hymn of the United States. It was adapted by a poem written in 1983 by Katharine Lee Bates.

My Country ‘Tis of Thee (also known as America) was written in  1832 by Samuel F. Smith. It was his desire to create a National Hymn for the Untied States.

The Star Spangled Banner-our National Anthem. Written by Frances Scott Key in 1814, it officially became our national anthem in 1931.

God Bless the USA-sometimes referred to the  ‘unofficial National Anthem’ was written by Lee Greenwood in 1983.

This Land is Your Land-written by folk singer Woody Guthrie in 1940.

God Bless America-an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin in 1938.

  1. My dad retired in St. Louis and where he and mom settled. Just close enough to his family in KC for occasional visits but far enough not to get involved. Yes, there are several bases there. Jefferson Barracks is their cemetery. My brother still lives in their old home. I’m doing some re-evaluating and trying to decide whether to press on or go a different direction. Change feels like the word of the year.

  2. I saw your like pop up and had to double check to make sure I had not missed a post. Haven’t seen you in awhile. Glad to see you here today. We had a nice afternoon (more birthday celebrations! ) but tucked in for the night by 8:00. Talk about the proverbial Party Poopers! Why St. Louis? Are you/they from there? It is nice that our military are no longer scorned as they were in our day. I know our country seems to take more pride in our service people. When a ransom occurrence happens I have seen people thank Thommmee for his service and he is always somewhat surprised but touched. That chokes me up too.

  3. I’m with you in that any patriotic music makes me cry. My dad served 20 years in the army and he and my mother have their ashes in Jefferson Barracks in St, Louis. We, their families, have served our country as well. I hope you had a lovely 4th. Mine was very quiet as I like them.

  4. Hi Jan – if you type in Robin Williams as the American Flag you will be quite surprised and probably brought to tears once again. There seem to be so few of us who Love America that we need to unite.

  5. Happy 4th of July! I hope you are enjoying the celebrations. Lovely photographs from your country and touching to see the photo of your dad laid to rest in Arlington. Warmest wishes to you.
